Degrees of Sustainability

... through sustaining community, recycling local resources, green environmental solutions, and providing room for growth

- site clean up of hazardous materials and reclamation

- salvaged building materials from local neighborhoods

- additional site opportunities (addition of theatre)

- solar roof on Mercado expansion

- solar reflector next to Mercado

- grey water collection and storage

(roof and field water stored in salvaged dairy water tower)

- run off mitigation and control (landscaping and porous paving)

- minimized building footprint

- maximize sun lighting – main interiors face winter sun rotation, sun shades protect from direct heating in summer while still maintaining view, athletic fields located south, western side of site provides shaded sidelines

- Building mass situated to mitigate winter winds from north

- maximize internal structure for natural chimney-effect (circular core) and cross ventilation (east-west classroom design)

- inhabitable green roofs
